A passion for Empowerment
Founded in 1970 by Dr. P. Leelavathy and Dr. S.K. Nagarajan, The Clarke School for the Deaf, Chennai, began modestly and has grown into one of India’s finest school for children with special needs, serving students nationwide.
With expertise in education, skills development, and rehabilitation, the school empowers children with diverse disabilities, including hearing impairments, intellectual disabilities, autism, cerebral palsy, and multiple disabilities, including deaf-blindness. It pioneers educational, vocational, and cultural rehabilitation services

Services
Assessment
The Child with Special Needs on enrolment has a profiling done for their current status along with demographic status, impairment conditions, onset and other vital information that are required to plan Early Intervention. After that, the Early Intervention programme uses a checklist of 250 skills across 5 developmental domains.
Early Intervention
The Early Intervention Programme for Children with Special Needs offered by The Clarke School is a structured program (Upanayan) for children with developmental delays and other impairments in India. The program was developed by the Madhuram Narayanan Centre for Exceptional Children (MNC) in Chennai, India and is based on indigenous practices and multi-disciplinary inputs.The program trains parents to act as co-teachers and co-therapists for their children. The program is designed to consider the strengths of each child and treat each child as unique.The program includes activities in group settings and an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Therapeutics
Children improve their motor development, including neck control, sitting, standing, and walking in the Physiotherapy interventions and also improve their cognitive abilities, such as problem-solving, memory retention, and concentration. They acquire pre-speech and pre-language skills before they learn to form words. Occupational therapy helps them to develop skills for independence, such as opening and closing things, stacking, and building. It also helps improve visual and sensory processing skills, posture, and coordination.
Academic Education
State Board
The Clarke School offers Tamil Nadu State Board of Education syllabus based special education from primary to higher secondary level for children with hearing impairments and mild Intellectual Disabilities.
NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling)
With growing opportunities to excel in education and gain equal employment opportunities, Clarke School also supports children with special needs in open schooling that offers flexible subjects selection, studying and attending examinations in their own pace with a longer duration. The schools offers educational support through expert counselors and trainers in secondary and senior secondary education for National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) syllabus with customised sessions, examination preparation, application and participation.
Vocational Education
The Clarke School with its commitment to empower children with special needs to achieve independent living or minimal dependency supports them in vocational training of their choice and skills by a standardised pre-vocational assessment programming system. After assessment, children at the age of 15 are guided and educated in a three years vocational training programme where they learn generic skills required for employment, safety and hygiene, employability skills, trade specific domain skills with a range of choice right from arts, handicraft to technology enabled jobs. In the final year.the children are provided with on the job training in collaboration with industry professionals, parents, entrepreneurs and guided for independent placement in any of the employment models like open (salaried), self, supported (parent or sibling or friend) and group (sheltered) employment.
